Casa Coa, Mexico

"There is a restorative power to this creativity, a deep respect and inclusivity. We are stitching everything back together; the making is the medicine."

Anna Starmer

Coa House featured in Luminary Issue 30 - LOVE

We featured Casa Coa as part of the story 'UPROOTED' in Issue 30 of Luminary Colour. Each colour theme in Luminary is bought to life through images and colour swatches that reveal the research and influences behind the theme.

"How can we weave stories of belonging and origin into the design process? Colour is a powerful thread, breathing life into our stories, offering deep-rooted connections revealing the meaning, empathy and truth inside the colour choices. Colours connect through cultural heritage and ancient meaning."

Casa Coa is the most recent residential proposal from Mexican interior architect Maye Ruiz, it is located on one of the most emblematic streets of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.

The aim was to conceive warm and seductive spaces, completely transforming this mansion through a subtle but striking intervention. Inspired by the snakes that adorned the original architecture, Maye decided to give life to an environment that evokes the naturalness of cornfields and bushes.

"The palette of green tones harmoniously intertwines with touches of red, pink and burgundy, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. The result is a fusion of styles, where handcrafted pieces, materials from the region and curved lines that emulate the grace of snakes coexist."

"Greens are forever intertwined with the landscape, nature’s resources and food; reds and oranges reflect the female bloodline, family and marriage; soft browns are extracted from the land, in grasses for weaving and walnut shells for dyeing."

MAYE is a collaborative studio of interior architecture, colorimetry and landscape, with a passion for colour and the conviction to create spaces with soul. This bold and colourful vision, has positioned Maye Ruiz at the forefront of a new wave of Latin American design - a fusion between the rich Mexican artisan tradition and contemporary avant-gardes.

After founding MAYE in 2021, a collaborative studio that bears her name, Maye Ruiz has stood out for a risky and feminine vision that continues to inspire those who seek to bring residential or commercial projects to life with a unique identity.

"The nature of artisan work offers individuals (often women) an opportunity to belong again, to connect, earn a wage and flourish. The global art and design worlds are at last recognising the beauty of traditional craft techniques, and the stories which reconnect us all to history, family traditions and lost cultural identities."
